Michael found a great book at the library a couple months ago called “Creepy Cute Crochet“. It has little crocheted zombies and ninjas and aliens and grim reapers. “Can you make these?” Sure, I can!
I stared at those patterns for three weeks. I simply didn’t understand them. I renewed the book for three more weeks. No, that didn’t help. I finally photocopied the whole damn book and set the patterns aside. A week before Michael’s birthday, I picked up the pattern for the zombie again…
Row 1: Sc 6 in ring, sl st to close round {6}
Row 2: Ch 1, sc 1 in same, (inc) around, sl st to close round {11}
Row 3 Ch 1, sc 1 in same, inc, inc, sc 3, (inc) 3 times, sc 3, sl st to close round {17}
Okay, yeah. What?
I can crochet. I know what the stitches are: sc is single crochet, sl st is slip stitch, inc is increase. But string it all together and it looks like a foreign language. So, what did I do? Give up? Call my mom (a crochet uber-expert)? No, I did what I always do when I don’t know how to do something. (Got that?)
I just sat down and did it. I figured out that the last number in brackets is the final amount of stitches you should have in each round. So I ignored everything else and just made sure I wound up with the right amount of stitches.
Ta-da! Michael was stunned that I had made him a zombie when I had told him I couldn’t figure out the pattern. I told a few people at work about my creatures and now I’ve sold two with five more orders in place!
Here’s a picture of the one I finished tonight. His name is O’James.
Look at that adorable vacant stare and the sweet dripping blood. Please note the stylish bow tie.
