I Made Homemade Tortillas Posted by samaree

I am trying to make more homemade foods. I like knowing exactly what is in the food that Michael and IĀ  are eating. I also like low fat and low sodium foods because it will keep both of us healthier. I found this great tortilla recipe a couple of weeks ago and saved it to make on my vacation. It’s a non-traditional tortilla for the fact that it doesn’t include shortening or lard. It won’t come out paper thin like commercial tortillas, it was more reminiscent of a pita. So, good and so much tastier than anything you could buy.

Flour Tortillas

2 cups all purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons vegetable oil

3/4 cup warm milk (about 110 degrees)

Mix first four ingredients. Stir in milk. Stir well, but don’t overmix. Dough will be sticky. Turn out onto floured surface and knead for 2 minutes. Place dough back into bowl, cover and let rest for 20 minutes.

I made tacos with mine (seasoned ground beef, shredded co-jack cheese, shredded green leaf lettuce, sour cream and salsa). I served homemade refried beans on the side (cooked pintos with a little oil, salt, pepper, onion powder, and salsa). The homemade tortillas really made the meal. I don’t think I’ll go back to commercially made ones. I think Michael said it best, “Oh, yeah, babe!”
