I love California rolls, but they are so expensive. The two supermarkets that have sushi bars charge almost $5.00 for 9 tiny pieces!
I found this sushi making kit on the shelves at my local Big Box Mart. You can view the kit here. It comes with sticky rice, nori wraps and soy sauce. I bought a package of sarimi (fake crab) for $1.00, a cucumber for 78 cents (what a rip off) and used a baby carrot I had in my fridge. Just cut what ever filling you are using into thin strips. You put a little bit of your fillings on the nori, pat on some rice and roll. When I couldn’t get the roll to close, I just sealed it with a bit of water. I had leftover rice, sarimi, and cucumber so I’ll be able to make more dishes with the ingredients.
Total cost: $2.16 for the kit, 10 cents worth of sarimi, 10 cents worth of cucumber and maybe 5 cents for the baby carrot = $2.41!
Today I packed a bento-style lunch with my sushi, some bite sized pickles in a little mustard jar (see pickle making instructions here), a hard boiled egg and a tiny yogurt. Yum!
