The in-laws gave me $50 in Goody Bucks for my birthday. Whoo hoo! My MILÂ and IÂ hit the Goodwill on the biggest retail road in the area. It’s not the best Goodwill, but it’s close and has a good stock turnover.
White (clear) barbs were 75% off this day and books were B1G1. I found two pairs of shoes right away. A pair of Rocket Dog platform sandals and a pair of tan leather platform moccasins. Both $4.50 each. Shoes no longer have tags, so they can’t be part of the color sales. I found a great knick knack shelf with cat cutouts for $4.00 (just have to sand and paint); a set of four mugs that go with me and Michael’s growing fruit and vegetable kitchen theme, just 50 cents each; a tote bag made out of a burlap rice sack (50 cents), a work mug for Michael (“They can’t fire me. I’m the only one who knows the phone number for pizza delivery”, 25 cents), a vintage travel iron (sans cord 50 cents, makes an excellent bookend for my mass markets).
I found a pair of jeans with dragons embroidered on the back pockets (full price, $7.00), a pair of black pinstripe trousers (from the Limited who I love, $5.00), and an Aqua Teen Hunger Force tshirt ($2.50) too small for Michael so I bought it to wear on his behalf.
I wasn’t finding any white barbs and I was getting ticked. Then I found a lavendar hoodie and track pant set for $7.50 ($1.88 with the discount), a long sleeve black lace blouse with silver satin tank $2.50 (very stevie nicks and only 63 cents), vintage Virgin Island T (63 cents), satin tank and shorts pj set (75 cents). My MIL found a “Warning Attitude” tshirt for me (63 cents). She also found an awesome Jack Skellington t and almost put it back. My 16 year old BIL, however, knew I would want it. For 63 cents, hecks yeah. (It’s a bit too small, but oh well. I wore it anyway.)
The books were picked over and awful as usual. I did find two cookbooks. One from the Culinary Institute of America ($4) and one on bread machine baking ($2). I also found a Maeve Binchy paperback ($1). I was a bit sneaky and made sure the lady rung up the two cookbooks at the beginning of my order, so I’d pay for the $4 book and get the $2 book free. I didn’t want to get the $1 book free. It was funny, though, because when she got to the lone paperback she reminded me, “books are buy one get one free”. I know, I said, I just couldn’t find another one. She acted all disgusted like she couldn’t believe I was wasting this sale oppurtunity. I really couldn’t find another one! Not for me, my MIL, my BILs, my mom, my hubby, anyone.
I spent a total of $57, so I decided to pay $5 for the Michiana Goodwill Boosters program. You get one 50% total purchase coupon per month. That’s worth the five bucks per year. But it’s been 10 business days since I signed up and no coupon yet. I’ll give it four more days and then I’m calling.
I might complain about thrifting, but this was a fantastic 2 and 1/2 hours. I wish I could do it every week.
